Для кого-то во главе угла стоит материальный достаток, и поэтому своим самым значительным достижением в компании они считают рост ее прибыли, к которому привели их грамотные действия. Но есть и те люди, для которых на первый план выходят высокая компетентность в избранном деле, удачные взаимоотношения внутри коллектива, душевное равновесие и самореализация. Juan Carlos Loredo, Jones Graduate School of Management at Rice University

A recent graduate of the McCombs School of Business at the University of Texas at Austin, Juan Carlos wrote this essay for Jones, where he was also accepted.

Throughout high school and college, I was able to achieve a great deal. My most significant accomplishment, however, occurred early this year. Since graduating, I have worked for TruGreen LandCare, receiving three promotions over the last two years.The most important of these took place this past January when I was named branch manager of the company's $3.7 million Houston-West division. Thus, at the age of 24, I became their youngest branch manager in the country by 10 years. I view the changes I have made in my division over the last nine months as my greatest accomplishment.

When arriving at the branch, I soon realized that it was losing money, the staff was fragmented and our reputation in the market was on the line. I was able to reintegrate the group, by replacing several lethargic, self-serving employees with energetic team players. As a group we set attainable yet challenging common goals in order to direct everyone to the same ends. I restructured the business by evaluating the profitability of each of our jobs. Those on which money was being lost were renegotiated to an acceptable margin or replaced with new clients. The result was a more positive revenue stream.



Then, by directing attention to time on the job, direct labor was reduced from 50 percent to less than 30 percent. In an industry as labor intensive as ours, this also made a significant impact on the bottom line. Lastly, we refocused our goals to achieve increased client satisfaction, thus regaining their confidence.

As a result of these steps the branch has, in the last eight months, gone from a losing enterprise to one that is clearly in the black. I view this accomplishment as important because of what it taught me about myself.

Specifically, I learned to use time efficiently, successfully handle leadership and multiple responsibilities, work cooperatively with others, value their input and hold true to the values around which I conduct my life, even in the rough and tumble of the business world.
