Rice University Jones Graduate School of Management

My most significant leadership experience is not the result of one incident, rather the aggregate of my SEAL instructor duties in San Diego. As a member of the training group I had the privilege to meet many interesting students who taught me much more than I could ever teach them.

During my first seven years as a SEAL operative my job was simple, prepare for war and become a proficient and skilled modern day warrior. My responsibilities included the care of myself and the other 15 members of my SEAL squad. After my goals were accomplished I began looking for other challenging opportunities and an avenue to advance my career. I applied to become a SEAL instructor and was accepted. My responsibilities widened at a fast pace, instead of a group of 16, now I would have the responsibility of as many as 90 at a time.

As a SEAL instructor the responsibilities are great and the challenges are many. Teach young SEAL candidates to have honor, courage and commitment Pass on all the experience learned so that when the time comes, the future operative will have the knowledge and skill to complete the mission despite all costs. Teach patience and aggressiveness, confidence and humility. But most of all teach the future SEAL how to think for themselves in times of great mental pressure.

When I arrived at the SEAL training command I quickly learned that as an instructor the future of the Naval Special Forces is put into your hands. I was responsible for teaching young SEAL candidates skills that could eventually save their lives or possibly cost them their lives. I wondered how I could possibly teach a class of 60 students whose education level ranged from Harvard graduates to a GED. I followed a few guidelines that I set for myself during my three years at the SEAL training command, and I believe it is with these guidelines that my leadership has prospered.

I have witnessed many good people rise to high levels in their careers or personal lives only to give it all away because of dishonesty. If we can not be honest with ourselves and those around us, the business we conduct either on the battle field or in the office will be marked with problems. I think working hard to achieve goals with honesty and integrity will allow a person to soar to new heights within an organization.

As an instructor in the SEAL teams there are often individuals that do not share the same ideas or values. These differences many times lead to conflict. When there is conflict, communication is at its lowest and the teaching process begins to fail. I have decided long ago to share my experiences and teach to the best of my ability regardless of my personal views of an individual. This attitude has allowed me to conduct myself professionally on daily basis when I am in view of students and as important, when I'm not in view.

I also believe very strongly that we should never underestimate our opponent or the task at hand and never overestimate our skills. This idea allows me to stay focused on the task before me, and I do not believe that there are very many occupations where a role model is important as it is in SEAL basic training. I think that a large part of leadership is helping others achieve their goals. I was happy to learn that using the principles that I thought were important to me had improved the instruction of the students. This was conveyed to me by my superiors in the form of many awards. I earned a reputation of a fair but stern instructor that allowed me to earn the respect of the students. This respect is important because I knew that the students were listening to what I had to say. My only hope is that now during the global crisis of our country my previous students will be able to make use of my instruction.
