The United States and Japan are very different countries culturally speaking, and the way business is conducted in each can be very confusing to visitors. Even social actions that one might think of as simple, such as greeting a new person, attending a meeting, or even socializing after work can be very different.
For example, when two people meet for the first time in a business setting in the U.S., it is customary to shake hands, say, "Nice to meet you" and perhaps ask a very simple question like "How are you?' In Japan, the custom is very different. When two people meet for the first time, it is expected that both will bow to a specific depth, depending on the status of the other person, and both will exchange business cards by holding them out with two hands. Once someone has given out their business card, the receiver must then carefully put the card away in a pocket so as to show a proper level of respect to its owner.
Business meetings are very different, too. In the U.S., when an important business meeting is held, it may be to gather the appropriate people together into a room in order to make a decision. In this case, everyone who is invited to the meeting is expected to participate, and more often than not, any person in the meeting is able to speak if they have a valuable and relevant contribution to the conversation. In Japan, a business meeting is more likely to be called when higher levels of management need to inform their staff of a decision that has been made. In these meetings, only senior members of the staff participate In any discussion that takes place.
Last comes social activity after work. While in the United States it is not uncommon for groups of people to occasionally go out after work, it is for the most part a voluntary activity. On the other hand, in Japanese business culture, it is often expected that employees will go out quite often after work with their coworkers and perhaps even their superiors, This is sometimes seen as an important teambuilding exercise, and the highest ranking person in a group will often end up paying the largest portion of the bill as a courtesy to the rest of the employees.
Despite all of these differences, business relations between Japan and the U.S, seem to be going strong. Every day people are flying across the Pacific Ocean in both directions. With a little studying and an open mind, they will be prepared to do business in a different culture.
