My professional goal is to attain a senior role in the real estate consulting industry within the next eight years. I feel that an MBA committed to real estate is critical to realizing this ambition. The ideal MBA would provide hands-on field experience through student-initiated projects, offer courses and development in a wide range of real estate topics and offer resources and facilities that show its commitment to staying on the cutting edge of the real estate industry. There is no doubt that I can find such an ideal MBA at Haas.

My background stems from accounting and finance. After I graduated from the NYU Stern Undergraduate School of Business, I joined Ernst & Young (E&Y) and specialized in the financial services industry. I enjoyed working in the finance industry because it was both analytical and fast-paced. After two years of auditing, I was invited to join Credit Suisse First Boston (CSFB) by a former supervisor who found me an excellent opportunity in the CSFB real estate product control group. I was attracted to the opportunity because I would learn about a new product, obtain exposure to a global business and report directly to a manager. I left E&Y ready to venture into the world of real estate.

Currently at CSFB, I have the exclusive responsibility of analyzing and monitoring multimillion dollar domestic and international real estate investment portfolios. I participate in weekly disposition meetings to discuss the status and exit strategies of distressed assets and then work closely with support groups such as risk and credit management, operations and financial control to ensure that the transactions are completed efficiently and accurately. Since these portfolios contain distressed assets that are no longer performing and recovery seems unlikely, they require daily analysis and monitoring. Upper management and regulatory agencies are constantly questioning and reviewing the portfolio. The volatile market and recent world affairs have made it even more critical for me to be fully onboard with any events that may impact the portfolio. As a result, my role in the real estate product control group can be fairly demanding.

My involvement with the real estate portfolios and my interaction with various top managers in different real estate functions have shown me that there are many facets to the real estate business. The business involves analyzing risk and exposure, assessing legal and tax implications and evaluating the latest trends in the real estate industry. Real estate is not an industry that one can easily jump into and learn on the job. It is an industry best learned through a classroom setting that combines lectures and case studies with interactive projects led by professionals who can apply business strategies to real estate. In addition, while I feel that the opportunities I have been afforded at CSFB provide ample exposure to real estate asset investments, I have limited exposure to other aspects of the business such as real estate finance and securitizations, ecommerce and urban development. These are areas I would like to explore and make part of my MBA curriculum.

There is no question that the MBA Real Estate Program at the Haas School of Business is one of the nation's top programs and offers incomparable resources at the Fisher Center for Real Estate and Urban Economics. The annual Real Estate and Economics Symposium sponsored by the research center is further evidence of the Haas dedication and commitment to excellence in the real estate industry. I hope that Haas will help me lay the groundwork upon which I can build my career in real estate.
