Allan Boomer

New York University Stern School of Business

After years of preparation and months of scrutinizing MBA programs throughout the world, my journey to success has brought me to New York University. Initially, it was Stern's academic reputation, strong entrepreneurial curriculum and geographic proximity to the major financial markets that attracted me. In the end, it was Opportunity that confirmed my decision.

I desire an MBA experience that will be the most memorable and worthwhile venture of my life. The degree itself will provide the education necessary to leverage my professional experience and expedite the achievement of my life's goal of being an entrepreneur. Realizing the gravity associated with choosing a school that would be well aligned with my goals, I spent a substantial amount of time evaluating business schools around the world.

In October, I experienced Stern firsthand. During the AHBBS Career Fair, I conversed with Stern graduates, current students, a corporate CEO and a number of high-ranking executives. The conference bolstered Stern's high standing by poignantly addressing the subject of "Leading Through Change" and exposing me to minority students poised to lead major corporations, as well as successful business magnates who attribute their success to Stern.

Surprisingly, the most revealing part of my Stern experience was actually my train-ride home. I passed the time perusing the aptly named student newspaper, Opportunity.

newspaperI always make it a point to read student newspapers because they offer a raw, unbiased university perspective, unlike the sparkling, politically-correct marketing brochures produced by admissions offices. I found Opportunity to be no ordinary periodical of the student body, thus an even more lucid confirmation that Stern is no ordinary business school.

My research of business school newspapers has led me to believe many are regurgitated collections of boring, poorly-written articles about trite topics like "Business School Is So Tough, Yet Rewarding," student/faculty profiles, club activities and career fairs. Opportunity, however, contains well-written articles that tackle a wide breadth of student-centered issues, like competing in a tough job market, U.S. foreign wartime policy, and ethics in management coupled with light-hearted humor in pieces about the New York supermarket experience and "businesspeak, "the vague and optimistic vernacular of corporate executives. I was also pleasantly surprised to find several community-related articles that explore the vast offerings of the Big Apple and detail volunteer opportunities.
