It was a typical scorching-hot summer day in Georgia. The heat index must have been above 100 degrees. My friend and I had just finished making the lengthy uphill trek to the 18th green, and we were absolutely exhausted from the four hours spent chasing a little white ball around in the intense heat and humidity. The sweat made it look like we had just fallen into the greenside pond. We waited a few seconds to catch our breath and then finally holed out our putts to end the round. Whew! The suffering was finally over. No more than a few seconds later, my friend and I turned to each other simultaneously and said, "Let's play another nine!"
Outside of work I enjoy golf. I began playing golf when I was 12 years old, and I have been addicted to the game ever since. My love for the game has driven me to play golf competitively in both high school and college. To my wallet's chagrin, this love for golf continues to take me out to the course at least once a week. Aside from playing, I love just being around golf. I caddied at local golf courses during weekends and summers throughout school and just recently, I chose to spend a week of my vacation caddying in the U.S. Amateur Golf Championship in Atlanta. I also love to teach golf— it gives me the opportunity to take part in and promote others' enjoyment of the game.
Hello, my name is Anthony and I am a bona fide "Golf Addict." Evidence of my addiction can be seen through several examples like the one about my friend and me wanting to play another nine holes despite being ready to physically collapse. I have actually taken alternative commuting routes to avoid driving past golf courses on my way to the office. It bothers me that I cannot be out there playing. You can also identify my fixation with golf through my willingness to sacrifice sleep and wake up at the crack of dawn on a weekend to get out to the course. A 7 a.m. office meeting is unspeakable, but a 7 a.m. tee time is sheer bliss. What is it that makes this sport so addictive? Is it the camaraderie of spending time with fellow golfers, the enjoyment of being outdoors or the emotional ups and downs of the game?
All of these factors contribute. To me, however, the main reason is that golf is one of the only sports in the world in which players of all skill levels can be as good or better than the pros at any given moment in time. I will never slam dunk a basketball like Michael Jordan or hit a homerun like Sammy Sosa, but I might sink the same 30-foot putt that Tiger Woods missed or hole out the same bunker shot that Jack Nicklaus hit over the green. These inevitable flashes of brilliance have drawn me so close to what I consider the world's greatest sport.
