Придаточное обстоятельственное можно "свернуть" до грамматической конструкции при одном условии: подлежащее главного предложения должно быть тем же, что и подлежащее, использованное при образовании придаточного. Запомнили? Теперь потренируемся!

Упражнение 1: Определение грамматических конструкций и придаточных обстоятельственных.

Напишите букву "C" в том случае, если в сложном предложении есть обстоятельственное придаточное. Если же предложение содержит "усеченный" вариант такого придаточного, напишите букву "P".

Например:

After finishing supper, Max went to the club to play basketball. (P)
Because the spare parts are difficult to buy here, I recommend that you don't get that car. (C)

1. These steps are repeated for successive colors until a multihued design is complete.

2. While staying at the Greyfield Inn, the tourist visited the ruins of Dungeness, the most famous Carnegie mansion.

3. Before migrating whales head for Baja, California's lagoons, they feed on krill in the Arctic waters.

4. When photographing the set, the camera operators corrected the change in positions.

5. Cowboys train their horses to neck-rein because holding the reins in one hand frees the other hand for roping.

6. After harpooning the walruses, the hunters drag the carcasses to camp for cutting.

7. Before Disneyland's opening in 1955, Anaheim was a pastoral community оf citrus groves.

8. After having convinced himself that the Hudson was only a river and not the Northwest Passage, Henry Hudson sailed back south.

Упражнение 2: Можно ли сократить придаточное обстоятельственное до отдельной фразы?

Если в предложениях, приведенных ниже, придаточное обстоятельственное можно сократить до грамматического оборота, внесите все необходимые изменения.

Например:

When ~~a cowboy is~~ working on the range, he (a cowboy) goes for a long period of time without seeing his family.

The most recent glaciation on Mount Kilimanjaro occurred between 1400 and 1700, when the Northern Hemisphere was in the grip of the Little Ice Age.

1. No two of them are alike, so you have to learn by experience.

2. In winter, the Magdalen Islands are almost as isolated as when Carrier first discovered them.

3. While the crew was waiting for the tide to come in, they checked all their equipment.

4. After they end their larval period, the worms suddenly grow sluggish and enter the stage of metamorphosing into adults.

5. By the time the permit was ready, it was too late to leave for the trip.

6. While knowledge about the brain is growing, many riddles of the thought process remain unsolved.

7. When they built the wall, the Romans also erected forts every mile.

8. The Hutterites had fled persecution in central Europe and Russia before they came to settle in the United States.
