In Dolce & Gabbana, we get a few hundred apprentices every year who dream of making it big in the fashion world. It is a tough world and few can survive the competition. I believe that in order to hold your ground, an aspiring leader needs to be a) focused and b) disciplined. Allow me to analyse David on these two parameters.
In my view, David stands a unique chance of growing into a fine leader. David has worked with me along with 70 other apprentices. David's work is enriched by his creativity and bold approach. He brings in a whole new perspective to a theme, and this ability stems from his ability to think 'out of the box.'
Since the last six months that I worked with him (we are working together for a mega fashion event) I have noticed that David is one of the few to walk in to work very early in the morning and is the last one to leave in the evening. We don't require our apprentices to normally stay late at work, but David believes in going beyond the call of duty because he says that he gets to maximize his learning in this way. During break time, I would often find him chatting with other senior colleagues. I am very confident of his relationship building skills.
David can be quite stubborn at times. I remember once I had to turn down a few of his designs as they didn't complement the overall theme of a fashion show. But David stuck on and produced many more new designs. Finally, the committee selected a couple of his designs for the fashion event. David's designs later became a commercial success for our company.
To give you a balanced view, let me also elaborate on David's weaknesses. I find David lacking in an ability to organize his work. He gets caught in nitty-gritty and fails to realize the 'big picture'. He is aware of this shortcoming and tries to overcome it by systematically planning things well in advance.
I do believe that he needs business education to enhance his skills and counter his weaknesses. Your business school has a well developed curriculum to build on students' competencies. I am confident that David can gain from and contribute to your business school.
